Who is Kip McGrath?

Kip McGrath is an internationally recognised and well-respected education brand that parents trust. For more than 45 years, Kip McGrath has helped hundreds of thousands of children improve their literacy and numeracy skills worldwide.

The Kip offering has evolved since its inception in Australia in 1976. The objective for Kip at that time was to provide something for his own family that wasn’t available in school. He could see ways in which his own children could do better in school. When the first Kip programs were introduced, the methods and resources quickly spread through friends, family and neighbours. The Kip McGrath programs had been launched. Some 47 years later, Kip McGrath continues to understand what works for students.

In 2023, Kip McGrath operates in 16 countries worldwide, with over 2.1 million lessons delivered annually. In the UK alone, 1,053M lessons were delivered last year. Since 1976, in excess of 2.3M students have attended lessons at Kip. These are staggering numbers and can be totally attributed to the success of what Kip does each week in the life of students.

Kip McGrath Derby South is an integral part of this global franchise business, where we’ve been helping Derby students do better in school since 2011. Sue & Dave see each week for themselves how the initial concept that Kip had in 1976 is still applicable today.  We are proud to be part of this life-enhancing opportunity for today’s young people.

That first Kip McGrath Education Centre opened its doors in NSW in Australia in 1976. Founded by schoolteachers Kip and Dug McGrath, that first tutoring centre has grown since then into the global franchise that Kip McGrath is today.

That first tuition centre was based in the family garage, where Kip and Dug tutored local children who needed help with their literacy and numeracy. Kip developed a remediation learning system, based on assessing the child to identify the gaps in their learning. From this assessment, a personalised programme was (and still is) created to meet the child’s learning needs. With a combination of computer, written and practical tasks, Kip’s methodology can bring a non-reader to functional literacy within 100 lessons.

From humble beginnings, Kip McGrath have grown into a global family of passionate, qualified teachers in over 560 tutoring centres across the 16 countries. All are driven by Kip’s guiding value – a child who needs help needs a teacher to motivate and guide them.

Decades on, Kip McGrath continues to develop in established countries and branch into new areas as the demand to improve English and maths skills grows and children become more empowered to change their life stories through education. Those children go on to build brighter futures for themselves.

Kip McGrath started in Maitland, NSW Australia in 1976 with the ideology of simply that:

“Every child can learn, they just need to be taught properly.
